Zeiss Standard Speed Lenses

Zeiss Standard Speed Lenses

The Zeiss Standard Speeds are very similar to the Zeiss Super Speed lenses, but about one stop slower, and available over a much wider range of focal lengths. They are small and lightweight primes (most of them under two pounds), making them a great choice for handheld and gimbal work. These are the Mark II standard speeds, with standard 0.8 mod gearings.

Originally introduced in the mid-1960s, Zeiss standard speed lenses have been used on such cinematic classics as The French Connection, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as well as Roger Deakins’ films Shawshank Redemption and Fargo. Their classic optics are frequently paired with modern digital sensors for a less clinical look, while still retaining sharpness. The wide focal lengths are relatively well-corrected, with straight lines remaining straight and corners typically remaining sharp. The whole series has moderate glare control, with less veiling glare than many other contemporary vintage lenses, due to the T* coatings.

The like the super speeds, the Zeiss standard speeds often cover more than s35 sensors, making them a fun pairing with large format cameras. If shooting full frame or larger, we suggest reviewing your particular sensor and aspect ratio settings at one of our camera prep benches during your prep day.
