Sony PXW-FX9

Sony PXW-FX9

The Sony PXW-FX9 (often called just the Sony FX9) camera features 4K video, Fast Hybrid AF autofocus, 15 stops of dynamic range, HDR, and a 7-stop electronic variable ND filter. The Sony FX9 is the camera of choice for thousands of documentary, event, reality TV, education, and corporate productions, and has become perhaps the most dominant camera in the documentary and reality category.

The FX9 camera boasts a locking E Mount interchangeable lens system, allowing the use of hundreds of native E mount lenses, as well as being easily adapted to PL and EF mounts.

Equipped with a full frame, oversampled 6K CMOS sensor, the FX9 delivers the highest image quality in the FX line. The Fast Hybrid AF autofocus system with face tracking enables precise focus, even in challenging conditions.

The PXW-FX9 features versatile input and output options, including 4K 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs, a 3G-SDI output for HD, and genlock and timecode support for interfacing with other cameras and sound equipment. The 4-channel audio recording and Multi-Interface (MI) shoe provide audio recording flexibility for nearly any situation. For productions requiring raw recording, the optional XDCA-FX9 extension unit can output 16-bit raw video over SDI to a compatible recorder.

Inspired by the high mobility “Run & Gun” style approach from the Sony FS7 series of cameras, the FX9 offers a continuously variable Electronic ND Filter. This allows instant exposure level changes without shutter or iris adjustments – even when moving from an inside space to outdoors, or while natural light conditions change during the shot.

Additional exposure flexibility comes from the Sony FX9’s dual base ISOs. Nearly identical imaging performance when working at both 800 and 4000 ISO makes the FX9 almost like two cameras: one for everyday shooting and a second exposure option for low light situations and when using slower lenses.

The internal gyroscope-driven image stabilization produces exceptionally smooth shots, rivaling the quality of stabilized gimbal footage. The FX9’s image stabilization metadata can be imported to Sony’s Catalyst Browse/Prepare software, to create incredibly stable visuals even when shooting handheld.

With internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording to dual XQD media, the FX9 is ready to integrate into any post production workflow. Proxy recording to an SD card is possible at up to 1080p and 9Mbps. The camera supports UHD recording at frame rates from 1 to 60 fps, and HD recording up to 180 fps. All of the FX series of cameras offer Sony’s S-Log 3 and S-Cinetone color looks and are designed to easily match between camera models. The FX9 also supports HDR mode for maximum compatibility with modern and legacy SDR displays.

Productions looking for a matching out-of-the-box look often combine the flagship Sony FX9 with the Sony FX6 and Sony FX3, allowing versatility between body styles and size, all using Sony’s S-Log3 gamut for easy post production and perfect color and contrast.

Our Sony FX9 cameras use firmware version 4.0 or later, unlocking the maximum potential of the camera for every application. For enhanced functionality, consider renting the separately available XDCA-FX9 extension unit. Well-suited to ENG shoulder-style and networked shooting, it offers advanced networking features, raw video output, a V-Mount battery plate, and a slot for an optional wireless audio receiver.
